Komen Global Initiative Community Grants

The community grants program is a culmination of the work carried out by the network of breast cancer advocates who have participated in the Course for the Cure™ over the last year. These six-month projects have been designed to address some of the most pressing issues faced in the fight against breast cancer which were identified in the various community profiles developed by the advocates in 2008.

In February 2009 Komen awarded 37 grants totaling more than US $250,000 for community projects in Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, Romania and Ukraine.

Grants were awarded based on the following criteria:

  1. Collaborative approach: An important goal of the community grants program is to provide funding and opportunity for CFTC participants to work together, implementing their enhanced skills gained through the workshops.

  2. Sustainability: The funding for each grant will cover a short-term project (six months).  Those proposals that have a long-term plan for sustainability will be viewed most favorably.  The proposed project may lay the groundwork for a larger, broader project.

  3. Identifies gaps found in community assessment: Findings from the Community Profiles should inform the design of project proposals.

  4. Impact on breast health: The outcomes of the grant projects should have a measurable impact on the breast health gaps it seeks to address at the local, regional or national level.

  5. Innovative approach: It is important that the proposed project identifies areas not already covered by current programs, and addresses the issues in a new and innovative manner.
